I hate bad news, but who doesn’t. My friend, the legendary Brant Miller, has a saying that we use as our approach to morning radio— “Sell blue sky and Sunshine.” These last few years in talk radio make that approach a hard sell.
This brings me to five-year-old AJ Freund—by now you know the details of his death. I can’t imagine the thoughts he had, what did I do? Why don’t my mom and dad love me? It just kills me. That little man and what he went through made zero sense. Someone made the comment that he became the child of all of us yesterday and I think that statement is right on the mark.
I was driving to my daughter’s softball game yesterday listening to News radio when they mentioned the “collabo” effort between Crystal Lake PD, State Police, County, and the FBI. Then I heard the name Chief James Black; I said to myself, Jim Black? That was one of my sons little league coaches so I shot him a text. I said, thanks for the work you and your team did. He texted back about what a long week it was, and that he was physically and mentally drained. Its stories like these that make us all think of our own kids, make us ask why. I support law enforcement, I always have. As I was getting ready for bed, a friend sent me a picture of her newborn baby girl and it made me think— at the end of a horrible day for the Chicago land area that has seen its share of crime and bad days…there it was, a little “blue sky and sunshine.”
Rest well AJ, Chicago loves you.

Great article Ray…we all should give our kids and extra hug…the extra hug being the hugs that little AJ didn’t receive. If you have Netflix watch the show called The Kindness Diaries….does restore you faith in humanity. Unfortunately we sensationalize (the media) the bad news and we should share some feel good stories also as there are a lot more good people than there are bad.
