What a Sunday that was! The past few days of working on the lawn and kids baseball games came to a screeching halt. Thank God for social media or we would have otherwise never known that it snowed, that Game of Thrones was going to be on, or that we would be witness to one of the best come backs in the history of sports.
Gina says to me “You don’t even watch golf” and I said, “This isn’t about golf,” this is life. I mean, tiger had it all — the money the game, the sponsors. He was like Jordan, everyone knew Tiger — he transcended the game of golf. By now we all know about the sex scandal, the DUI, the recovery, then after that it was back to a game that seemingly left him — surgery after surgery, missing the cuts, missing the Masters.
I won’t pretend to know the game of golf or everything Tiger went through, I will leave that up to some writer at ESPN. But, what I do know is this — everyday in America someone is told what they cant do, what they cant have, they are told that “those days are gone” and that basically, thanks to our 30-second memory and obsession with shiny new things that we need to settle for whatever’s left. Yesterday, across living rooms and family rooms everywhere, that was proven untrue. Grown men were crying for this man, not because they have some great connection with Tiger Woods but because they saw themselves on that green.
Tiger winning the Masters was Dale Sr. winning the Daytona 500,cool, it was the 2016 Cubs, it was MJ in 95, it was the Red Sox in 2004 — only it may have been better! Yesterday was more than a game of golf; it was a testament to the human spirit. And if a faction of your family was watching your eyes sweat, that’s ok! Because sooner or later whether it has to do with health, career, or a relationship, we will all one day need a Tiger like comeback!
Thanks to a guy in a red shirt and a Nike hat ending his day with the embrace of his 3-year-old son we all know now, we can do it!
